Sept. 15 Canfield forum topic targets religion, race, society
CANFIELD — An open forum on “Religion, Race and Society” is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St.
A panel discussion on race and other social justice issues from a Christian perspective will be presented by Rev. Terry Hazel of St. Michael Church in Canfield; the Rev. Orlando Chaffee, district superintendent of the Mahoning Valley District of the United Methodist Church; Dr. Victor Wan-Tatah, professor of African studies and Christianity at Youngstown State University; the Rev. Lewis Macklin of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church; and the Rev. Don Christensen, senior pastor at Canfield UMC. Moderator will be the Rev. Jen Williamson of Canfield UMC.
The panelists will answer four prepared questions that will ask them to use Biblical passages, personal experiences and theology to speak about issues of social justice.
There also will be a number of clergy present who will help facilitate brief discussions among those attending concerning their personal reactions and positions following the panelists’ sharing.
There will be time for audience members to ask questions of the panelists.
