Argentines sweep tango championships

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentine couples swept this year’s World Tango Championships, outdancing about 400 competitors from many countries to win first prize in both the Stage Tango and Salon Tango categories.

Melody Celatti, 19, and Jose Fernandez, 22, won the final round of the Stage Tango contest Monday night after practicing nonstop for four months.

Don LaFontaine dies; voice of movie trailers

LOS ANGELES — Don LaFontaine, the voice behind thousands of Hollywood movie trailers, has died. He was 68.

LaFontaine’s agent Vanessa Gilbert says the voiceover artist died Monday as a result of complications from the treatment of an ongoing illness at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

LaFontaine has been a fixture in Hollywood for decades, working on about 5,000 movie trailers. Much of his fame stems from his trademark movie-trailer catch phrase, “In a world where ...”

Rolling Stones logo art is bought by museum

LONDON — Mick Jagger’s pout is officially fit for a museum.

London’s Victoria and Albert Museum announced Tuesday that it bought the original artwork for The Rolling Stones’ famous “lips” logo, inspired by the singer’s mouth.

The museum said it bought the work at an auction in the United States for $92,500.

The lips-and-tongue logo was designed by London art student John Pasche in 1970 and first used on the band’s “Sticky Fingers” album the next year.

Former CBS newsman Ike Pappas dies at 75

NEW YORK — Ike Pappas, a longtime CBS newsman who reported the shooting death of presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald on the radio as it was happening, has died at age 75.

Pappas died Sunday in a hospital in Arlington, Va., of complications of heart disease, his family said.

Pappas was among the reporters at the Dallas police station waiting for Oswald to be moved two days after President Kennedy was assassinated. Pappas had just asked him, “You have anything to say in your defense?” when a shot rang out.

“Oswald has been shot!” Pappas said on the air, adding, “Mass confusion here, all the doors have been locked. Holy mackerel!”
