Cutters repeat success formula
The Scrappers fell behind in the first inning on the way to a 5-1 defeat.
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — For the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, it was deja vu all over again.
Saturday night, the Scrappers played loose defense that allowed Williamsport to score three runs in the first inning of a 3-1 Crosscutters win.
Twenty-three hours later, it was more of the same as the Cutters put together a pair of hits, a hit batsman and a couple of Scrapper errors for a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat. They never looked back as they won 5-1 before 2,351 fans at Bowman Field.
Although he took the loss, Scrappers starting pitcher Kaimi Mead drew some praise from manager Travis Fryman.
“Kaimi actually threw the ball pretty well,” Fryman said. “But again, our defense was pretty poor and overall, it was pretty much a repeat of last night’s game.
“We also had very little offense and with only three hits and three errors, you are not going to win many ball games and that is not very impressive.”
As for the multitude of errors of late, Fryman feels it comes down one simple matter.
“You have to catch and throw the baseball,” he said. “If you are going to win baseball games, you have to be able to pitch and catch the ball and tonight, we didn’t do either one of those very well.”
While the Crosscutters were taking advantage of everything the Scrappers were giving them, Williamsport pitcher Kyle Drabek was dominating as he retired 12 of the first 13 men he faced, 11 of the outs as a result of ground balls.
Drabek only gave up one hit in his six innings of work, a harmless double to Brock Simpson in the second.
“He looked really good,” said Fryman of Drabek. “He did a great job around the [strike] zone and as a result, he got all of those ground balls which is a little bit unusual in this league. He looked real good for me out there today.”
Williamsport extended its lead to 4-0 with a single run in the third inning and it stayed that way until the Scrappers finally got on the board with an earned run off Cutter reliever Jesse Oster in the seventh.
Mahoning Valley used a walk to Cord Phelps and a RBI double by Simpson to score its only run. In addition to Simpson’s pair of doubles, the only other Scrappers’ hit was a leadoff single by Isaias Velasquez in the eighth.
Still leading 4-1 heading down the stretch, the Cutters added another run in the seventh inning.
