Hockey team ranked

YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU men’s hockey club is nationally ranked for the first time ever.

Playing in the CHMA, the Penguins defeated three straight ranked opponents — a 5-3 win over Pitt, a 7-6 victory over Slippery Rock and a 5-3 decision over West Virginia.

YSU is now ranked 23rd in the ACHA coaches poll.

The team is in its third season.

Barnes selected

YOUNGSTOWN — YSU’s Dominique Barnes was selected one of the Missouri Valley Conference Football players of the week.

Barnes (5-11, 180) was picked the league’s special team’s player of the week.

He returned two kickoffs for 105 yards, including a career-long 57-yard return.

His 48-yard return in the second quarter helped setup YSU’s first touchdown. He also caught three passes for 22 yards.

Mooney tickets

YOUNGSTOWN — Tickets for the Cardinal Mooney-Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Division IV regional quarterfinal football game Friday at Stambaugh Stadium at 7:30 p.m. will be on sale four days this week at Mooney.

The sales days are Tuesday from noon-3 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The ticket price is $7 which will increase to $9 at the gate.

McDonald tickets

Tickets for the first-round playoff game between McDonald and Berlin Center Western Reserve at McDonald at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 31, will be $7.00 for both students and adults presale and $9.00 for both students and adults at the gate.

No McDonald season tickets or senior passes will be honored according to OHSAA guidelines.

Tickets can be purchased at the athletic office or main office of McDonald High School or at Roosevelt Elementary Wednesday through Friday, 7:45 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Griffin is picked

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney student Karrington Griffin was selected the Steel Valley Conference football player of the week.

In Saturday’s win over Columbus Watterson, Griffin ran 17 times for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

Figure skating

SAN FRANCISCO — Mahoning Valley figure skater Alyson Rudnytsky took home top honors at the ISI Adult Figure Skating Championships recently.

Rudnytsky, representing the Mahoning Valley Phantoms Figure Skating Club, placed first in the free style, compulsory and rhythmic events while placing second in the artistic and spotlight skating events.

Blue Jackets call up goalie Dan LaCosta

COLUMBUS — The Blue Jackets recalled goalie Dan LaCosta on an emergency basis from Syracuse of the AHL on Sunday and sent down defenseman Kris Russell.

LaCosta stopped 15 of 17 shots in 35 minutes in relief of Fredrik Norrena at Nashville on Oct. 18 in his only action this season with the Blue Jackets. He is 5-0 with a 2.08 goals-against average in five games with the Crunch.

Russell has one assist in five games with Columbus. He has posted two goals and nine assists in 72 career games.

Crew denies United

COLUMBUS — Brad Evans scored the only goal and the Columbus Crew denied D.C. United a playoff berth with a 1-0 victory Sunday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

United (11-15-4) closed out the season with 37 points, handing New York the final wild-card spot with 39. Columbus (17-7-6) already had secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with the league’s best record.

Evans scored on a left-footed, 28-yard blast that bounced off the left goalpost and into the back of the net in the 77th minute.

D.C. had two shots turned away in the first half by the same left goalpost that aided Evans. United also hit the crossbar from close range in the second half.

Hedrick edges Davis

WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Chad Hedrick edged rival Shani Davis in a 5,000 meter race on Sunday in which both Olympic medalists shattered the Pettit National Ice Center record for the distance.

They skated in the same pair with Hedrick winning in 6 minutes, 16.23 seconds to shave 8 seconds off the mark of 6:24.25 he set Oct. 23, 2005.

Nancy Swider-Peltz Jr. of Wheaton, Ill., won the women’s 3,000 in 4:08.03 in the other race on the third and final day of competition to select the U.S. World Cup teams.
