YOUNGSTOWN — Toni Van Pelt, executive director for Public Policy, Center For Inquiry/DC, will address “The Dangers of Freethinking Women” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.

The lecture will chronicle the Western International Women’s Movement of the mid-1800s, with Van Pelt focusing on the women who struggled against religious oppression to secure political and civil rights for all women in the West.

The public is invited to the free event sponsored by the Dr. James Dale Center and the Women’s Study Program at YSU.

The lecture will be followed by a brief question and answer period.

Trumbull road closings

WARREN — Two Trumbull County roads will be closed for crosspipe replacements this week in Johnston and Vernon Townships.

Sodom Hutchings Road between state Route 88 and Bradley Brownlee Road in Johnston Township will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. The detour involves use of Bradley Brownlee Road, Stoddard Hayes Road and state Route 5/state Route 88.

Also closed will be Warner Road between state Route 88 and Bradley Brownlee Road on the Johnston/Vernon township line Thursday and Friday. The detour involves use of Bradley Brownlee Road, Bushnell Campbell Road and state Route 88.

Audubon Society event

CANFIELD — The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley meeting Tuesday will have Jim McCormac, author of “Birds of Ohio” and an avian education specialist with the Ohio Division of Wildlife, as its speaker. He will discuss the state’s rare habitats.

The meeting will be at the Mill Creek MetroPark Farm on state Route 46. Social time is at 6:30 p.m., with the program at 7. If you have McCormac’s book, bring it for signing. The public is invited.

Teen Challenge banquet

BOARDMAN — The Ohio Valley Teen Challenge fall fundraiser banquet will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Operating Engineers Hall, 291 McClurg Road.

The speaker is the Rev. John Harper, state executive director of Teen Challenge Illinois and a 1973 Teen Challenge graduate.

Ohio Valley Teen Challenge, a faith-based drug addiction program, has traditionally operated a residential and crisis referral center here. However, the organization plans to open an adult residential center for men in early 2009 in the former Cafaro/Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital building.
