Democrats fail to counter false assertions

Democrats fail to counter false assertions

EDITOR:

As great a campaign as Sen. Obama has run to date, he and the Democratic Party fall distressingly short in properly informing citizens of relevant arguments that counter serious false assertions. Some examples:

Assertion: Acorn is perpetrating voter fraud.

Acorn has not perpetrated fraud, it has suffered from fraud. Unlike other democracies, in the United States, “private” organizations do much of the voter registration work. Acorn has paid people to gather voter registration signatures which, by law, they are required to turn in to election officials. If the gatherer of signatures received money from Acorn while having knowingly falsified the work, the fraud was committed against Acorn, not a board of elections. Beside that, it is registration fraud, not election fraud. Mickey Mouse ain’t going to vote — even if he’s registered.

Assertion: Obama wants to redistribute wealth, a socialist idea.

Redistribution of wealth is going on. Republicans are the guilty party. A short time ago “Joe the plumber” said Obama “wants to distribute wealth ... that’s kind of a socialist view point ... It’s my decision who I want to give my money to.” Beside the fact that Sen. Obama’s tax policy would reduce Joe’s taxes, Joe should also be made aware of the following:

CEOs in other nations make about 40 times the annual wages of their lowest paid employee, while in the United States the guys at the top make more than 400 times as much. The wealthiest 1 percent of Americans make 22 percent of all income in the United States while the bottom half takes home 13 percent. Obviously the system presently distributes most income to the wealthy few.

Joe ought to know that if people who work for a living don’t make enough money, plumbers will not be called out to do their work. Joe’s income rests upon the prosperity of fellow citizens. Between 1973 and 2005 the amount of all income grew 160 percent. Meanwhile, worker productivity grew 80 percent, but the average income for the bottom 90 percent of Americans declined 11 percent, adjusted for inflation.

It’s a shame for Obama and the Democrats to allow people like Joe to remain so ill informed.
