Cleanup day scheduled for New Castle area

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A community cleanup day for the city’s lower east side is scheduled for Saturday.

Volunteers are to meet at 8 a.m. at the I Care House at 602 Court St. Cleanup efforts will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo recently explained that the city cannot hire enough manpower to keep streets and neighborhoods clean because of its financial recovery status under Pennsylvania Act 47.

As a result, his administration has asked residents to help clean up the city.

Public works director Joseph Scrim and Anthony Cioffi, code enforcement foreman, have targeted the city’s lower east side. The city has asked city employees, area Boy Scout troops and other organizations to help.

The city will focus on cleaning up trash in the streets and vacant lots, the mayor said.

City officials have discussed having regularly scheduled cleanup days and are considering initiating the practice in the spring.

Anyone interested in participating may show up at the I Care House or contact the mayor’s office at (724) 656-3500 for more information.
