JEFFERSON — Hubbard had an 8-7 lead in the fifth game but Mentor Lake Catholic staged a rally to win, 15-11, and take the district championship at Jefferson High. Hubbard was led by Jackie Carlisle with 28 kills. Lexi Starheim had eight blocks and 11 kills, Dawn Lingenfelter made 34 digs, Marcy Angelo had 38 assists and Taylor Gasser scored 14 points with two aces. Lake Catholic (24-2) and Hubbard (24-2) entered the match ranked No. 8 and No. 5 in the state, respectively. Lake Catholic advances to the regional tournament at Stow-Munroe Falls High, and will face Salem on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Hubbard coach Chuck Montgomery said his team had a chance near the end, but couldn’t sustain its advantage. “We lost the first two games and fought back big time,” Montgomery said. “The kids never quit and gave a great effort and had a lead, 8-7, in the fifth game; then Mentor Lake Catholic went on a run with four or five points and ended up a 15-11 winner.” Montgomery said Hubbard won five games in last year's district final.
