Historical society classes to focus on preservation

MERCER — The Mercer County Historical Society will sponsor a workshop on preservation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Helen Black Miller Chapel at the headquarters, 119 S. Pitt St.

The cost of $7 includes lunch. The class will be led by retired preservationist Marge Crompton and executive director Bill Philson. Emphasis will be on paper and fabric preservation.

In the morning session, participants will learn to hydrate and encapsulate paper artifacts such as letters, documents and maps. They may take a small item for encapsulation. Preservation of photos will not be included in this workshop. After lunch, the session will cover care and preservation of fabrics, such as dresses, quilts and military items. Handouts and catalogs of preservation supplies will be available.
