NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College women’s soccer player Samantha Killmeyer currently leads the nation in assists.

The freshman midfielder’s one assist per game is tops among NCAA Division III players in games through Oct. 19.

Holyfield back in court

ATLANTA — Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield was back in court Wednesday, again facing the possibility of jail time in a child-support case, but a settlement was reached after he agreed to a $100,000 college fund for his 10-year-old son.

Holyfield also consented to pay private school tuition before college, reinstated health insurance for his son and settled $4,500 in attorney fees, according to Randy Kessler, a lawyer for the child’s mother, Toi Irvin. The agreement was reached before a scheduled hearing in Fayette County Superior Court in suburban Atlanta.

“My client is pleased that we didn’t have to litigate,” Kessler said. “She didn’t want him incarcerated. The last thing she wanted was to be the one to ask that he go to jail. She’s glad we got it resolved.”

Bryant not serious

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Lakers fans can rest easy. Kobe Bryant’s right knee was a bit sore Wednesday, but the injury isn’t serious and it’s possible he won’t miss any playing time.

“I’m all right, a little bit better today, a better mood, anyway,” Bryant said after sitting out practice due to the hyperextended right knee he suffered Tuesday night in the second quarter of the Lakers’ 102-98 preseason victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in San Diego.

Wearing an ice bag on his knee, Bryant said he felt a lot better about his injury.

Aqueduct slots deal

ALBANY, N.Y. — The state Senate’s Republican majority is going along with a $370 million deal to bring video slot machines to Aqueduct Race Track after stalling for nearly two weeks.

During a televised debate Wednesday, Queens Republican Sen. Serphin Maltese said the Senate will endorse the deal because the company picked for the project has since provided more detailed information and a commitment to develop the area surrounding the track.

Gov. David Paterson and the Assembly’s Democratic majority earlier this month chose a Buffalo company’s bid to establish video slot machines at the track, which is in Maltese’s Queens district.

Fellow American Mardy Fish, the No. 8 seed, was upset by Feliciano Lopez of Spain, 7-6 (9), 6-4, in a second-round match.

In the first round, Marcos Baghdatis was again hampered by injuries, losing to Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Baghdatis needed treatment on his back during the match. The 23-year-old also missed matches due to a wrist injury. He was ranked as high as No. 14 in April and went into the match against Granollers ranked 43rd, but will drop even lower after the loss.
