Sobriety checkpoint set in Mahoning County

A sobriety checkpoint will be somewhere in Mahoning County from 11 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday.

Members of the Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will have increased impaired-driving enforcement.

The mission of the task force is to keep roads safe by reducing alcohol- and drug-related crashes through public awareness and enforcement.

The task force encourages responsible drinking and the use of sober designated drivers.

Adoption open house at Animal Welfare League

LORDSTOWN — The Animal Welfare League will have a special “Make A Difference Day Adoption” open house from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at its shelter at 545 Brunstetter Road S.W.

The league will have big and small, young and old four-legged companions available for adoption.

Man charged in theft of aluminum siding

YOUNGSTOWN — A man seen stripping aluminum siding off a house on Edwards Street was detained for police by the owner, who lives nearby.

Earl K. Watson Jr., 50, of Lakewood Avenue, was charged with theft, possession of criminal tools and possession of drug paraphernalia (crack pipe). He was arraigned Monday in municipal court and will be back Oct. 30 for a pretrial hearing.

Watson told police Sunday that he needed a little money and figured the house was vacant and abandoned. Aluminum siding, a tire iron and crack pipe were taken as evidence.
