Chance for free pizza
POLAND — Village and township residents who have working smoke detectors in their homes may get a free pizza.
The Western Reserve Joint Fire District is teaming with Papa John’s Pizza and Lowe’s of Boardman for the Fire Prevention Month event. Anyone who orders a Papa John’s delivery pizza by calling the Tiffany Boulevard location at (330) 758-7272 between 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday or Saturday has a chance to win a free one-topping pizza.
If a Poland firefighter accompanies the Papa John’s delivery person bringing the pizza to the door, the resident allows the firefighter to check his smoke detector, and if the device works, the resident will get a certificate for a free one-topping pizza for their next delivery. If the smoke detectors don’t work, the fire department will replace the batteries or the whole unit free, courtesy of Lowe’s Boardman store.
Firefighters aren’t guaranteed to accompany every delivery, but they will visit as many homes as they’re able. Smoke detectors will be distributed while supplies last.
Traffic stop arrests
YOUNGSTOWN — A convicted felon with a loaded gun being driven around by a man with a suspended license were both arrested on the South Side during a traffic stop. Derek Tensley, 31, of Arlington Street is charged with having a weapon while under disability and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. Michael Wilder, 29, of Parkvista Court, is charged with driving under suspension and failure to signal a turn. Both were arraigned Monday in municipal court.
The Chevrolet that Wilder was driving was pulled over at 1:50 a.m. Sunday when he failed to signal a turn onto Market Street from Hylda Avenue, police said. A loaded .32-caliber handgun was found behind Tensely’s passenger seat.
In June, Tensley, who had pleaded guilty to cocaine possession, was sentenced to three years’ community control and had his driver’s license suspended for six months. He was also ordered to complete an in-house program at Community Corrections Association and obtain drug and employment counseling.
Tensley spent time in prison in 2005, based on a cocaine possession conviction from 2003, records show.
