COLUMBIANA — A Lego Blocks contest open to all ages will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Columbiana Public Library, 332 N. Middle St.
Participants will have 90 minutes to create their own Thanksgiving Day decoration, which will be placed on display at the library for the month of November.
Age groups will be 8 and under, 9 to 12, 13 to 17, and 18 and over.
Contestants must be registered in advance and take their own Legos. Nothing can be preassembled, and the finished project can not exceed 8 by 10 inches.

Board changes meeting
NEWTON FALLS — The Newton Falls Public Library Board of Trustees has rescheduled is regular monthly meeting from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Palmer Meeting Room of the library, located at 204 S. Canal St.
Instructors sought
BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is searching for people interested in becoming baby-sitter instructors.
Due to the popularity of its baby-sitter training course, the chapter needs more instructors to teach the classes.
The chapter will provide instructor training from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 8392 Tod Ave. The training will cost $25.

MammoVan at YWCA
YOUNGSTOWN — Breast cancer screenings will be offered in the MammoVan from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave., and Tuesday at the ACOP Center, 2051 Niles Road, Warren.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women 40 and older have a mammogram once a year.
Also on Monday, the YWCA is presenting a free community event in recognition of October as Lupus Awareness Month.
A speaker from the Pittsburgh Lupus Center of Excellence will present “Lupus: Where We Are Now” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oakhill Renaissance Center, 345 Oakhill Ave.
Warren’s Relay for Life largest in Ohio
WARREN — The proceeds from the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life events were recently totaled, and Trumbull and Mahoning counties efforts were in the top category for 2008.
Warren’s relay raised $462,321 and was the largest event in the state. Boardman’s relay raised $257,896 and was the second largest in the state.
“The Northeast Ohio Region is the top region out of the five in Ohio for income raised because of the strong volunteer leadership at all of the relays,” said Shannon Ealy, regional income development director of the Northeast Ohio Region of the ACS.
Trumbull and Mahoning counties also raised the most within their population bracket for total relay income raised by county. Both counties were in the population bracket of 200,000 to 399,999.
Trumbull raised $810,555 to lead the state, while Mahoning County brought in $465,436 to earn second place.

Recovery group meets
HUBBARD — A nondenominational divorce recovery program meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays in the basement administration building at St. Patrick Church, 25 N. Main St.
Entry is through the side door by the Divorce Recovery Sign. The program is both educational and supportive to help individuals cope with separation and divorce. There is no charge.

Grant for Akron Children’s in Mahoning Valley
YOUNGSTOWN — The Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mahoning Valley & Western Pennsylvania (RMHC) recently awarded a $302,000 grant to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
The grant was awarded to fund a respite center on the campus of the new inpatient hospital scheduled to open in December.
Akron Children’s Hospital’s new inpatient pediatric hospital will be located at 6505 Market St. in Boardman.
The new medical campus will include a 32-bed inpatient unit for general pediatric medical care, a 24-hour emergency department, outpatient oncology services, infusion center, and radiology and lab services.
The campus will also include the Ronald McDonald Respite Center, which is scheduled to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2009.
Help Hotline ranked 13th
YOUNGSTOWN — Based on quality of service and number of calls, the Help Hotline Crisis Center was ranked 13th in the country and has been selected to become a Regional Center for Public Health Region 5.
Region 5 includes Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The Help Hotline Crisis Center is one of more than 130 certified crisis centers that participates in the Lifeline.
The Lifeline is a federally funded national hotline network of local crisis centers administered by the Mental Health Association of New York City.
Being a Regional Center, the Help Hotline in the Valley will be responsible to back up those states and answer any Lifeline calls that a region is unable to take.
Help Hotline will receive funding from the national network to operate these backup services.
