Kiwanis Club installs slate of officers

YOUNGSTOWN — Natalie Scott of Austintown was installed as president of the Kiwanis Club of Youngstown during a meeting on Oct. 3 at the YMCA. Seated as her associate officers were Christopher McCarty, president-elect; Bryan Kenzie, vice president; and Rachael Ramps, secretary/treasurer. Outgoing President Gary Winslow will serve on the executive board.

The ceremony was conducted by Larry Coleman, lieutenant governor of division 21 and member of Toronto, Ohio, Kiwanis Club.

Scott will be serving as club president on the worldwide Kiwanis leadership team with Donald R. Canady of Fisher, Ind., newly elected president of Kiwanis International. The focus of the international for 2008-09 will continue to be “Young Children: Priority One.”

The local club conducts an annual radio auction as a fundraiser, is involved with the Youngstown School System and supports such organizations as Boys and Girls Club and Junior Achievement, and sponsors a Builders Club at the Alpha and Athena Middle School, and a Key Club at Chaney High School. It recently partnered with MRDD to charter The Mahoning Valley Aktion Club.

DSAV donates resource materials to libraries

COLUMBIANA — On Oct. 15 the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley presented new resource materials to the Columbiana Library, 322 N. Middle St. This was the first of a series of presentations to be made by the DSAV to area libraries in Ohio during October.

A portion of the $50,000 raised during a Buddy Walk of the Valley in August is being used by DSAV to purchase more than 200 new and accurate Down Syndrome materials for libraries in Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Mercer, and Lawrence counties.

BPJWL plans fundraiser

BOARDMAN — Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will present A Countdown to Christmas from 6-11 p.m. Nov. 21 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center. Proceeds will benefit Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center. Tickets cost $50 and include dinner, dancing with The Classics, a Chinese auction, a 50-50 raffle and a reverse raffle with a chance to win $2,500. Tickets must be purchased by Nov. 7.

The Center provided more than $650,000 worth of un-reimbursable services last year to those struggling with communication challenges. It provides speech, audiology and other services to the deaf and hard of hearing while maintaining the mission to treat all regardless of ability to pay.
