Shriners Open golf

LAS VEGAS — Marc Turnesa holed out from 159 yards for eagle on the par-4 18th hole to offset a 17th-hole double bogey and maintain a share of the lead Friday in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Tied for the first-round lead, Turnesa followed his opening 62 with a 64 to match Matt Kuchar at 18-under 126 — one off the PGA Tour’s 36-hole records for total score and relation to par. Kuchar had his second straight 63 at TPC Summerlin.

Zach Johnson, the other first-round leader after winning the Texas Open last week, was third at 17 under after a 65 in sunny, calm conditions.

Turnesa, a PGA Tour rookie, birdied Nos. 14-16, then dropped two strokes on the par-3 17th after hitting into the water.

Kapalua LPGA Classic

KAPALUA, Hawaii — Brittany Lang shot a 1-under 71 on Friday for a share of the second-round lead with Suzann Pettersen in the inaugural Kapalua LPGA Classic.

Lang stayed aggressive despite the breezes that frustrated many players, birdieing Nos. 11 and 13 to match Pettersen (72) at 4-under 140.

The morning groups enjoyed calmer conditions with the tradewinds again picking up in the afternoon. Early rain softened the slick greens at the Bay Course and the overcast conditions provided some relief from the sun.

Administaff Classic

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Andy Bean hit all 18 greens in regulation and shot a 7-under 65 to take the first-round lead in the Administaff Small Business Classic.

The 55-year-old Bean, the Regions Charity Classic winner in May, had a one-stroke lead over Jay Haas and Joey Sindelar in the Champions Tour event. Sandy Lyle, Lonnie Nielsen, Brad Bryant and Wayne Grady opened with 67s at The Woodlands Country Club.

Hal Sutton shot a 71 in his Champions Tour debut.

Portugal Masters

VILAMOURA, Portugal — Wales’ Stuart Manley shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Spain’s Alvaro Quiros in the Portugal Masters.

Manley had an 11-under 133 total. Quiros also shot a 68.

Breeders’ Cup Classic

Despite questions that have swirled around Santa Anita Park’s new Pro-Ride surface this year, a record 180 horses — including reigning Horse of the Year Curlin — have been pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships to be held Oct. 24 and 25 at the Arcadia, Calif. track.

It will be the first time the Breeders’ Cup has been run over a synthetic surface and, while many expressed dismay over that decision, it succeeded in luring the largest contingent of international horses the event has seen.

A record 35 horses from overseas have been pre-entered, led by the multiple Group I-winning Coolmore duo of Duke of Marmalade and Henrythenavigator. Both are scheduled to take on Curlin.

Nyquist wins BMX

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ryan Nyquist won the BMX Park competition Friday at the PlayStation Pro to end Daniel Dhers’ winning streak at four.

“I upset Daniel’s streak, but it’s competition, you know,” Nyquist said.

The 29-year-old Nyquist, from Los Gatos, Calif., did a backflip over the spine, a 720 barspin over the long box jump and a huge 540 double barspin over the 10-foot quarterpipe to score 95.00. Dhers, from Venezuela, was second at 93.33, and Austen Coleman of Los Angeles finished third at 92.67.
