Sophomore learns to use annoying stickers

Dear Heloise: I am a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Southern Maine, and I enjoy reading your column in the Morning Sentinel, which is the newspaper in my hometown of Waterville, Maine.

My hint is in regard to brown paper bag lunches. I use these to take my lunch to work and always like to add a piece of fresh fruit. I could never find anything to do with the stickers that come on the fruit. Then I realized that after I folded the top of the bag over, I could use the sticker to seal the bag. Emily Sawyer, Waterville, Maine

Emily, finally a use for those annoying stickers that many people dislike! Glad you read the column in your paper, which has been running my column for more than 20 years!

I’d love to print more hints from Mainers, so folks, send them in, and we will run a full column with money-saving, recycling and timesaving hints. Send your entry to Heloise@CompuServe.com (put “Maine hint” in subject line), fax to 210-HELOISE (435-6473), or mail a letter to Heloise, P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279-5000. Heloise

Dear Heloise: It seems everyone has more than one remote control for TVs, VCR, etc. To keep from searching for them, place a small, sectioned wicker basket on an end table for the remotes. Now they are easy to find! Shirley in Conway, Ark.

Dear Heloise: I am famous for buying Christmas gifts all through the year and forgetting where I put them. My solution was to buy a medium-size plastic tote with a lid for each family member and label it with the person’s first name. Now, locating hidden gifts is easy when it comes time to take inventory and wrap them. I store them in a spare closet, but of course I don’t have little ones snooping, either. Barbara Blevins, Pierceville, Kan.

Dear Heloise: After getting a spot of bleach on a shell top that matched an outfit, I mixed bleach and water, put it in a spray bottle and sprayed the shell. I now have a pattern of dots on the shell and can wear it instead of throwing it out. Spray lightly and repeat if necessary. Marie W., Leasburg, N.C.

Dear Heloise: My husband’s toolbox included a razor-fitted window scraper for the occasional cleanup after painting or changing car stickers. I borrow it whenever I clean. I have moved it to a hook under the bathroom sink. My husband knows where to find it when doing occasional jobs. I will keep it out of reach when I have little visitors.

Since moving from Virginia, I enjoy reading your column online in The Washington Post. Laele Pepin, Carolina Shores, N.C.
