Men’s golf in sixth

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The YSU men’s golf team finished sixth at the IPFW Fall Classic at Deer Track Golf Course.

The Penguins carded a three-round total of 901 (302-297-307) at the event. Fellow Horizon League member Loyola won the event with an 856 (284-273-299).

Junior Tim Morrow finished in sixth place with a three-round total of 216 (302-292-307) for YSU.

Four strokes behind in 12th was redshirt freshman Joey Santisi with a 220 (74-68-78).

Formeck is winner

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The YSU women’s golf team finished in first place and freshman Samantha Formeck won medalist honors at the Robert Morris Invitational.

The Penguins finished with a two round total of 648 (321-327), and won the event by 17 strokes over second-place finisher IUPUI.

All five Penguin golfers finished in the top 10.

Formcek shot a 160 (81-79), and has won medalist honors three times this season. Senior Mollie Boney finished in second, one stroke behind (78-83).

Sophomore Katie Rogner was fifth (81-84) and junior Ann Ciavarella took seventh (81-86).

OHSAA basketball rules meeting

AUSTINTOWN — The OHSAA rules interpretation meeting for basketball will be held tonight at 7:15 at Fitch High School’s auditorium.

Each school must be represented by a coach or administrator, and all officials are required to attend.

Thunder signs LB

BOARDMAN — Fullback-linebacker Tavarski Wallace has been assigned to the Mahoning Valley Thunder for the 2009 season.

Wallace, a 6-foot-, 237-pound af2 rookie from Adrian (Mich.) College, is the first player signed for next season.

Wallace played last season in the Danish American Football Federation. At Adrian he was a three-time Division III All-American and holds the NCAA Div. III career record for tackles with 429.

He also holds the school records for tackles in a game (33) and season (155).

Inside Boxing

YOUNGSTOWN — Tonight’s “Inside Boxing” radio show will pay tribute to longtime boxing writer Sal Marino.

The show, which airs from 6 p.m. to 8 on AM-1240, will feature guest appearances from former area boxing champions Greg Richardson, Jeff Lampkin and Harry Arroyo, calls from Kelly Pavlik and his trainer, Jack Loew, and many others.

Marino is a former correspondent for The Vindicator.

Clemente named

AKRON — Colin Clemente, a senior golfer for the University of Akron this past season, has been named to the 2008 Cleveland Golf All-Academic All-American Scholars team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

It was the first time that Clemente has been named an Academic All-American, although twice before he was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference teams.

Clemente, who achieved a 3.2 grade-point average with a major in biology and graduated in May, was Akron’s top golfer as a senior, and was named to the 2008 All-MAC first team after being chosen to the second team in 2007.

As a senior, he had seven top-10 and 10 top-25 finishes in 13 tournaments, including a fourth-place finish in the MAC Championships to make the all-tournament team.

Rohan is picked

OMAHA, Neb. — Eddie Rohan, a sophomore designated hitter on the Winthrop University baseball team from Youngstown and Ursuline High, continues to win honors after his outstanding freshman season this year.

After winning freshman All-America honors from Collegiate

Baseball, Rohan was named to the Ping! Baseball All-American Freshman Team.

Rohan, who also played in the Youngstown Class B League, slugged 13 home runs this past season to rank No. 5 in the Big South Conference and No. 1 among freshmen in the league. He was named to the All-Big South second team.

Rohan’s 13 homers tied the school record for most homers by a freshman in one season. He now shares the record with former player Daniel Carte.

Ward singled out

BETHANY, W.Va. - Bethany College freshman Cameron Ward has been recognized as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 13th.

Ward led the Bison to their first victory this past week while defeating PAC rival Thiel. He led the BC with four goals, bringing his season total to seven. Ward also leads the Bison in points with a total of 14 points.
