Improvements planned around Mineral Ridge High

MINERAL RIDGE — Weathersfield Township trustees have applied for a $180,000 grant through the Small Communities Improvement Program for the first phase of a three-part sidewalk repair, new installation and road upgrades on Seaborn and Union Streets, which border Mineral Ridge High School.

Township Administrator David Pugh explained that the project is planned to improve the roadway around the high school and to extend sidewalks past the first 300 yards at the top of Seaborn, which runs in front of the high school.

The plans include correcting Seaborn, widening and repaving it all the way down the hill, correcting curbing and repairing drainage.

The second phase would be to install sidewalks on Union Street which runs behind the high school, as well as widening the road, curbing it, paving it and installing drainage.

There are now sidewalks on state Route 46 which lead to the sidewalks at the top of Seaborn, and the three-part plan would extend sidewalks to Depot Street, which runs south of the Middle school off Route 46. Depot already has sidewalks.

The township’s portion of the cost would be 16 percent of the $180,000 for Phase I, if approved, Trustee Fred Bobovnyk said.

The state is expected to finalize prioritizing submitted projects this month. Bobovnyk said the township expects to learn next year whether it has been approved for a grant.
