COLD CASE | DNA evidence will have crucial role in trial

YOUNGSTOWN — A man and woman who knew Bennie Adams in 1985 saw him at an ATM machine in Liberty Township, in Gina Tenney’s car, the night the Youngstown State University student was killed.

That information — and a preview of evidence indicating Adams’ DNA was found on the woman — were part of opening statements in Adams’ murder trial Wednesday morning in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Defense attorney Anthony Meranto, meanwhile, said jurors will find that recollections have mysteriously changed in nearly 23 years since the woman’s death.

Tenney died Dec. 29, 1985. Adams was charged with her murder last October after scientists examined DNA found on Tenney.
