Golfers play through as flames burn nearby
LOS ANGELES — Some golfers just keep right on playing, even as a wildfire rages in the mountains above them.
A fire broke out Monday morning in the Santa Susana Mountains overlooking the course at Porter Valley Country Club. Then strong winds arrived, and the whipping flames and blankets of smoke moved away from the course.
Golf pro Sue Schroer says the golfers decided to stay where they were and no one was ordered to evacuate.
About 140 golfers are on the course, taking part in the club’s Dennis Casey Memorial Tournament.
Long sentence
MINNEAPOLIS — A third defendant in the killing of former Villanova basketball star Howard Porter has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Fredquinzo King was sentenced Monday in district court in Minneapolis. He had pleaded guilty earlier.
Porter, a 58-year-old probation officer, was beaten to death in May 2007.
His wife, Theresa Neal, said in court that her husband wouldn’t have wanted “an eye for an eye” for his killers. Neal said if Howard Porter had lived, he would have been the first man to help the killers if they left prison.
Carl Lewis selected
Carl Lewis, winner of nine Olympic gold medals, has been selected as a member of USA Track and Field’s seven-person audit panel, CEO Doug Logan announced on his blog Monday.
The committee will analyze the selection process for the team, coaching and preparation for international competitions. Members will also study the performance of the Beijing team, in particular national relay team preparation and training.
The U.S. contingent won 23 medals — the most of any country — but will be remembered more for dropping the baton in both the men’s and women’s 400-meter preliminaries.
The panel also includes gold medalist Benita Fitzgerald Mosley, silver medalist Ralph Mann, 1992 Olympic men’s coach Mel Rosen and U.S. Olympic Committee’s Doug Ingram.

Kohl tests positive
PARIS — Third-place Tour de France finisher Bernhard Kohl tested positive for a banned blood booster when his race samples were checked for the new drug.
French anti-doping agency director Pierre Bordry told The Associated Press on Monday that he told Austrian anti-doping authorities, who confirmed the doping case.
The Austrian cyclist is the fourth rider to be caught using CERA, an advanced version of EPO.
Bordry would not say whether tests are completed on samples from other riders, leaving open the possibility of more positive results. The International Olympic Committee also plans to retest Beijing Games’ samples to search for CERA.
