Kellen Winslow still hospitalized

BEREA — Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow remains hospitalized with an undisclosed illness, making it more likely he won’t play in Monday night’s game against the New York Giants.

Winslow missed a fourth straight practice Saturday morning. He was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic on Thursday for tests and evaluation after feeling ill for several days.

Team spokeswoman Amy Palcic says it is unclear whether the Pro Bowler will spend Saturday night in the hospital. She says there’s still a 50-50 chance Winslow will play Monday against the defending Super Bowl champions.

Winslow has undergone four knee surgeries and has had to play through pain throughout most of his four-year NFL career.

His illness is not believed to be related to any of his previous injuries.

Strong comeback bids

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Former world skeleton champion Noelle Pikus-Pace and 2006 Olympian Kevin Ellis opened their comeback quests Saturday by advancing to the final round of the U.S. national team trials for bobsled and skeleton.

Pikus-Pace — who missed the 2006 Turin Games because of a broken leg and skipped last season to have a baby — won by an overwhelming margin of nearly 21‚Ñ2 seconds over Katie Koczynski in the semifinals of the skeleton trials.

Ellis, who broke his back in a sledding accident away from the track at Turin, was second in skeleton, 1.4 seconds behind newcomer Luke Schulz.

Klitschko stops Peter, reclaims WBC belt

BERLIN — Vitali Klitschko reclaimed the WBC belt and fulfilled a self-proclaimed dream to hold a heavyweight title at the same time as his brother, stopping Samuel Peter with a technical knockout Saturday night.

Peter chose not to come back out after eight rounds that saw him weaving and occasionally wobbling as Klitschko landed a persistent stream of heavy jabs to Peter’s head in front of more than 12,000 people at the new O2 World Arena.

The 37-year-old Ukranian fighter (36-2, 35 KOs) used his height — he’s 6-foot-7 — and reach to keep Peter crouched and defensive.

Wladimir Klitschko, widely considered the most talented among the chaotic field of so-called heavyweight champions, holds the IBF and WBO heavyweight belts — and dealt Peter his only previous loss, in September 2005 in a 12-round unanimous decision.

Volvo Ocean Race

ALICANTE, Spain — The Volvo Ocean Race started Saturday with eight teams racing into strong wind and choppy seas, each seeking to claim one of sailing’s most prestigious prizes.

Windy conditions and a white-capped sea made it hard to hear the start gun for the 37,000 nautical mile round-the-world race from Alicante to the finish line in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Ericsson 4, skippered by Torben Grael, made the fastest start through heavy swells, leading around the first two markers off the southeastern Mediterranean coast. The boat was a minute ahead of Puma, with Telefonica Blue in third place. Team Russia ran into early problems and was in last place as the boats headed away from port.

The 11-man crews will race southwest to the Strait of Gibraltar.

Bulgaria, Italy in soccer tie, 0-0

SOFIA, Bulgaria — Italy, with half its top lineup out with injuries, was held to a 0-0 tie by Bulgaria on Saturday in a World Cup qualifier.

The reigning world champions have seven points from three games in Group 8. Bulgaria has two points from two games.

“The guys played with authority and good personality,” Italy coach Marcello Lippi said. “We tried everything we could to win. But (Bulgaria) has good players and we’re content with this result.”

Bulgaria came close to scoring in the 13th minute at Vasil Levski Stadium when Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov took a cross from Blagoi Georgiev, but his strong volley was blocked by Italy goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

In the 59th, Alberto Gilardino’s header from a corner kick was saved by Dimitar Ivankov. A few minutes later the striker — who has seven goals for Fiorentina this season — dribbled past the defense before shooting narrowly wide. In the 79th, Daniele De Rossi’s long, dipping shot sailed just over the bar.
