WELDING AWAY: This file photo shows Bill Schellenger, a welder for Connell Steel Erectors, tacking a section of galvanized steel for the Spring Common Bridge’s new walkway in the 1980s. The newly renovated Spring Common Bridge is set to open Friday. The bridge will now be known as the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial Bridge.

At left, crews complete work on the renovated structure.
