MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE \ Saturday’s games
Ohio 26, Kent St. 19
KENT — Ohio University (2-6, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) used 203 yards passing from quarterback Boo Jackson and a trio of second-half field goals to overcome 336 yards of total offense from Golden Flashes quarterback Julian Edelman. Jackson got the Bobcats on the board first with his legs, running nine yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter. But Edelman did the most rushing damage, finishing with a game-high 136 yards on 21 carries. The Kent State (1-6, 0-3) quarterback also threw for 200 yards — including an 82-yard scoring strike to receiver Shawn Bayes — completing 15 of 25 passes with two interceptions and a touchdown. Bayes finished with 141 yards on five receptions.
Army 17, E. Michigan 13.
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Collin Mooney gained a career-high 229 yards and helped set up quarterback Chip Bowden’s decisive 9-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter as Army rallied. It was the first home win for Army (2-4) this season and snapped its five-game losing streak at Michie Stadium. Eastern Michigan (2-5), coming off a last-minute victory a week ago at Bowling Green, couldn’t take advantage of Mooney’s fumble midway through the fourth quarter, and the Black Knights held on. Mooney, who had 187 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns in a 44-13 win a week ago at Tulane, became the first Army back to go over 200 yards since Carlton Jones had 213 against Air Force in 2004.
N. Illinois 17, Miami (Ohio) 13
DEKALB, Ill. — Northern Illinois thwarted Miami University’s bid for a come-from-behind victory with a last-ditch defensive stand to preserve a victory. Huskie cornerback Melvin Rice and linebacker Josh Allen broke up back-to-back end zone passes by RedHawks quarterback Dan Raudabaugh with less than 90 seconds to play to shut down the late Miami of Ohio drive. Northern Illinois (3-3, 2-1) has now won three of its last four games, with only a four-point loss at Tennessee in the span. Miami slipped to 1-5 and has lost three straight. The RedHawks led 13-10 after a 35-yard Nathan Parseghian field goal with 4:53 left in the third quarter. Northern Illinois reclaimed the lead with 2:32 remaining when sophomore tailback Chad Spann capped a 5-play, 67-yard drive with his 2-yard touchdown run.
Cent. Michigan 24, Temple 14.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Brian Brunner came on for injured star quarterback Dan LeFevour and threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Anderson early in the fourth quarter. Brunner, a senior who had gone into the game with one pass attempt this season, finished 7-for-13 for 136 yards for the Chippewas (4-2, 3-0 MAC). LeFevour, the 2007 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, left in the second quarter with an ankle injury after completing 10-of-11 passes for 106 yards and two touchdown passes to Antonio Brown. Coach Butch Jones said after the game that LeFevour’s injury was not serious.
Western Michigan 34, Buffalo 28
AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) — Tim Hiller’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Branden Ledbetter in overtime lifted Western Michigan (6-1, 4-0 Mid-American Conference). Western Michigan scored 22 points in the fourth quarter and sent the game into overtime when Hiller found Jamarko Simmons in the end zone with 5 seconds left to play. Hiller completed 42-of-63 passes and threw 345 yards and four touchdowns. Buffalo (2-4, 1-2 MAC) had the ball first in overtime and drove to the Broncos’ 11-yard line, but Drew Willy’s pass tipped off Naam Roosevelt’s hands and into the arms of Western’s Louis Delmas. Willy was 17-of-34 for 157 yards and gave up one interception. Western Michigan drew within 21-14, scoring on a 6-yard Hiller-to-Juan Nunez connection with 9:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, followed with a two-point conversion.
