Candlelight vigil planned

YOUNGSTOWN — Sojourner House Domestic Violence Program will have its annual candlelight vigil at noon Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.

This year’s theme is “We Shall Overcome” and will feature statements by survivors and service providers, along with poetry readings and musical selections.

Diana McConnell, a domestic violence victim, will share her experiences. Jamie Marich, a therapist who counsels victims, will explain her role in helping individuals seeking help, and Rebecca Kalas, a Youngstown State University student, completing her social work internship at Sojourner House, will offer her perspective on domestic violence issues and solutions. Vocalists Ronald Johnson and Beatrice Bentley will provide inspirational songs, and Courtney Thompson will conduct a poetry reading.

Social Security help

SALEM — A Social Security Administration representative will be available to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Salem Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. The public can apply for a replacement SSA card or retirement, survivor or disability benefits, bring in proofs (such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, military forms, etc.) for a current claim, and get general SSA information.

An SSA representative will be available the second Tuesday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the memorial building, excluding federal holidays. For November only, the representative will be on site the third Tuesday, Nov. 18, because of the Veterans Day holiday Nov. 11. In December, visits will resume on the second Tuesday of the month.

Meeting day moved

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township trustees have moved their monthly meeting from Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday in observance of Columbus Day.

Committee on crime

YOUNGSTOWN — Councilman John Swierz, D-7th, will have a meeting at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers on the sixth floor of city hall to discuss the establishment of a Blue Ribbon Committee to focus on ways to decrease juvenile crime and violence in the city. Audubon plans walk

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring a fall walk beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Kennedy Park. Parking is by the basketball courts. The walk is along Mosquito Creek, which is a national Designated Important Bird Area. Binoculars are recommended but not necessary. Dress for the weather.
