Scott selected
YOUNGSTOWN — YSU senior forward Tiara Scott was named to the Horizon League Preseason Second-Team, the league announced on Friday in conjunction with the preseason poll.
Scott was a second-team all-conference player a year ago and was also named to the all-newcomer team.
YSU was picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll of the league’s coaches, women’s basketball sports information contacts and a media representative from each market.
Scott ranked fifth in the league in scoring and sixth in rebounding in conference contests.
In the preseason poll, defending regular-season champion Green Bay earned 24 first-place votes and 284 points to be tabbed as the favorite. Wright State was picked second with 241 points and one first-place vote, Milwaukee received 240 points and two first-place votes to finish third, and tournament champion Cleveland State picked up one first-place vote and 228 points to finish fourth.

HBO’s 30-minute special, “Countdown to Pavlik-Hopkins” will premiere on the main service at midnight tonight.

CANFIELD — After a scoreless first half, Jared Turocy scored a goal off an assist by Pat Connors to give the Cardinals (7-4-5) a 1-0 lead four minutes into the second half.
Niles answered with a goal 10 minutes later. Canfield goalkeeper Mike Thomas had eight saves.

Canseco detained
SAN DIEGO — Jose Canseco was held for nearly 10 hours by immigration authorities after agents said they stopped the former baseball star with a fertility drug as he returned from Mexico, his lawyer said Friday.
Canceco was detained at San Diego’s San Ysidro border crossing Thursday after agents searched his vehicle and said they found human chorionic gonadotropin, which is illegal without a prescription, said his attorney, Gregory Emerson.
Emerson declined to say if Canseco had the drug, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for use in males.
Elle Pickle wins
ARCADIA, Calif. — Elle Pickle rallied from last place to edge Christmas Ship by 13‚Ñ4 lengths Friday in the $52,000 feature race at Santa Anita.
Elle Pickle, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, ran 1 1-8 miles on Santa Anita’s turf course in 1:47.69 and paid $8.20, $4.20 and $3.60. The win was the third for Elle Pickle and was worth $31,200, raising the career earnings of the New Zealand-bred 6-year-old to $49,311.

Ballesteros improves
MADRID, Spain — Seve Ballesteros was moved out of intensive care Friday but remained hospitalized four days after being admitted because of a dizzy spell.
Madrid’s La Paz hospital said the 51-year-old Spaniard was in stable condition. He will have more tests to determine what made him lose consciousness on Monday.
Ballesteros said he was “feeling well” in a message written on his Web site on Thursday.
