THE PLAN
THE PLAN
Trumbull MetroParks
Here are highlights of the comprehensive plan written by the Trumbull County Planning Commission for the Trumbull County MetroParks Board:
Cost of plan: $20,000 from the MetroParks budget, which is funded mostly by the Trumbull County commissioners.
Planner: Jonathan Millea of Cuyahoga Falls, hired in July 2007, just after he completed his master’s degree at the University of Akron. He has since left the Trumbull Planning Commission for a job in Cincinnati. Completing work on the plan will be Planning Director Alan Knapp, who is retiring at the end of this year.
Key components
Bike, hike and walking trails: 10 proposed or current trails besides the Western Reserve Heritage and Western Reserve Greenway trails. Other ones are along the Mahoning River, along Mosquito Lake, Orangeville to Cortland, Cortland to Warren, West Farmington to Warren, Newton Falls to Braceville, along Pymatuning Creek, Masury to Hubbard, Mud Run Corridor in Hubbard, and Johnston Township to Kinsman.
Canoeing and kayaking: A 23-mile Mahoning River canoe trail that would run from Foster Park in Newton Township north through Newton Falls, east to a newly acquired property in Braceville Township park near the Ohio Turnpike; to Thomas A. Swift park in Braceville Township; to Canoe City in Warren Township; to small parks at Woodview Circle and Lynwood Drive Northwest (near Burbank Park), all in Warren Township; then to Packard Park in Warren.
Canoe-kayak trails are proposed for two other areas: along Mosquito Creek from the Mosquito Lake Dam to Robbins Avenue in Niles and the extension of a canoe trail on Pymatuning Creek between Kinsman and Orangeville.
Other ideas: Establish a permanent aviation park for model airplanes and a remote-control race-car track, possibly at the location of an existing airplane runway near the Trumbull County Fairgrounds; create an all-terrain vehicle park; establish more winter recreation such as sledding hills at West Farmington Nature Preserve, and more outdoor events.
