Poland second at state golf tourney

COLUMBUS — Poland High is tied for second place after the first day of the Division II girls state golf championship at Ohio State’s Gray Course.
Senior Ariel Witmer of South Range, competing as an individual, shot even-par 70. Her closest pursuer, Morgan Ransom of Gahanna Columbus Academy, shot 74.
The Bulldogs, led by 84s shot by Allison Mitzel and Angela Molaskey, had a team score of 346 to tie Tipp City Tippecanoe. Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown leads the field with a team score of 344.
Besides Mitzel, a sophomore, and Molaskey, a junior, freshman Maria Mancini shot 88, senior Lauren Erdel shot 96 and junior Mariah Groner shot 90.
Cardinal Mooney was in 12th place with a team score of 392.
The Cardinals were led by junior Jackie Evans’ 88 and sophomore Amber Bruno’s 90. Junior Kelly Murphy shot 103, freshman Alyssa Culp shot 111 and junior Haley Manuel shot 113.
The event will conclude today with 18 holes.
Hunting Valley University School leads the boys Div. II event, played on the OSU Scarlet Course, with 319. Dayton Chaminade-Julienne is second with 328 and Chagrin Falls is third with 331.
Sam Jadel of Chaminade-Julienne had the low round of the day, a 73.
In boys Div. III, Lima Central Catholic leads with 317, followed by Sugarcreek Garaway with 319 and Gates Mills Gilmour with 324.
Warren JFK’s Bruce Timko, a sophomore competing as an individual, shot 75 to lead the competition. Delphos St. John’s Brad Wannemacher shot 78 to stand in second place.
Kevin Miller of Garaway shot 72 for the overall low round of the day.
