St. Christine School plans Allergy Awareness Day
YOUNGSTOWN — St. Christine School will have its first Allergy Awareness Day on Tuesday.
With allergies, especially peanut, becoming more commonplace in schools, St. Christine’s wanted to take a proactive approach and educate its pupils. The campaign is called, “Be a P.A.L. — Protect A Life.”
The kickoff will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m. with speakers, a film and interactive activities.
Grades four to eight will have an Academic Challenge — pupils vs. staff — on how aware people are about allergies.
The school will unveil its new “peanut-free” table, which will sit in its peanut-free caf .
The school will also be making a donation to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. Pupils who donate $1 on that day will receive a coupon for a “dress down” day later in the month.
Liberty to join FIRST
LIBERTY — Adult and student representatives from Champion, Chaney, Girard and Warren Harding high schools came to Liberty High School this week to introduce Liberty students to FIRST robotics through video and robot demonstrations.
Liberty will be the first local school to take advantage of funding made possible through Congressman Tim Ryan for local school programs interested in incorporating robotics into their curriculum and/or extracurricular activities.
The school plans to begin recruiting FIRST team members this year.
FIRST is an international program combining cooperation and robotic competition as students work with technical professionals to learn about engineering, science and technology. Teams design, build and program a robot to compete in a unique game challenge each year.
In 2008, Champion won the Long Island Regional FIRST competition, and the Girard and Harding teams won the Buckeye Regional together in 2007.
Students to read poetry at Art Outreach Gallery
NILES — Students from Warren G. Harding High School will present an evening of Poetry Readings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Art Outreach Gallery in the Eastwood Mall.
Pig Iron Press is the event sponsor. The event is free and open to the public.
The theme of the reading will be “A Remembrance.”
The Gallery will be accepting donations of a nonperishable food item for Second Harvest Food Bank and Warren Family Mission. The Art Outreach Gallery is across from American Eagle Outfitters, along the concourse between Macy’s and J.C. Penney. Gallery hours are Friday 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday 1 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
Award for dental program
YOUNGSTOWN — The Choffin Career and Technical Center’s adult Dental Assisting Program has been awarded the Access to Dental Care Award by the Ohio Dental Association.
The program was recognized for its outstanding efforts in addressing the oral-health needs of underserved children and adults in Youngstown. Residents from Forum Health and St. Elizabeth Hospital use the Choffin Clinic every Tuesday and Wednesday to care for eight-10 patients free of charge.
The program has also been involved with Give Kids A Smile Day since its inception, providing a full week of dental care each year to underserved children in the Youngstown area. This past year, $7,410 in dental work was donated during the Give Kids A Smile activities.
Choffin has undergone a $10 million dollar renovation project that includes adding six new treatment areas to the clinic. The program is accepting applications for the 2009-10 class.
Beta Mu Circle honored at Grove City College
GROVE CITY, Pa. — Grove City College’s Beta Mu Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa has been awarded the 2007-08 Circle of Distinction award for exceptional performance. It is one of only 18 out of 311 circles nationwide to receive this honor.
ODK recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character of college students.
Grove City’s Beta Mu Circle, established in 1947, sponsors the Senior Man and Woman of the Year Award and the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award, with the College’s Mortar Board chapter.
