Two fire departments fight blaze in Campbell
CAMPBELL — Two fire stations responded to smoke billowing from a vacant steel mill in Campbell today.
Both the Youngstown and Campbell fire departments arrived at the former Cold Metal Products building on 455 S. Montgomery at 12:44 p.m. to put out a fire sparked by workers.
A Campbell fire official said the former steel mill within the structure is being removed to make room for future tenant Youngstown Pipe and Supply.
While removing old machinery, it is believed a worker cut into an oil line with a saw, causing the oil to smolder, the official said.
Employees did not take notice of anything unusual, but after leaving the building, the smoldering oil sparked a fire.
Within an hour of arrival, the departments extinguished the fire using water reserves from their trucks. There is no estimate of damage to the property, the official said, because the affected surroundings were planned to be torn out. No injuries were reported.
