Driver of runaway bus pleads no contest

CLEVELAND (AP) — The driver of a runaway school bus in Cleveland has pleaded no contest to endangering children and failing to have a commercial driver’s license.

Michael Weir was driving children to The Arts Academy on April 7 when he stopped for fuel at a downtown gas station. When he went into the restroom, the bus rolled down a hill.

An 11-year-old boy steered the bus out of a truck’s path and into a bridge support. No one was severely injured.

Weir was fined $600 Tuesday and put on probation for one year. His attorney could not be reached to comment.

Bus owner Aqua Limo of Westlake and the charter school pleaded no contest to two counts of endangering children. Each faces up to $10,000 in fines at a sentencing Nov. 13.
