Area tennis, golf players compete in district play


OBERLIN — Boardman High’s doubles team of Carolyn and Ann Jesko split in its two matches Wednesday in the Division I district tennis tournament here at Oberlin College, but they are still alive to earn a berth in next week’s state tournament.

The Jeskos defeated Julie Wang and Michelle Djohan of Westlake in Wednesday’s opening round 6-2, 6-2, but then ran up against McKenzie Cona and Cristin Reed of Walsh Jesuit. The two teams came up with a real battle as Boardman took the opening set 6-1, then dropped the second 6-2. The third set went to a tie-breaker with Walsh Jesuit pulling out a 7-6 win.

The Jeskos will play North Canton Hoover Saturday as one of four teams still eligible to earn a spot in the state tournament.

Division II tennis

CANTON — Cardinal Mooney’s doubles team of Alli St. George and Jaclyn DiDomenico, along with Poland’s singles standout Gabrielle Brocker will all be playing for a chance to go to the state tournament Saturday.

St. George and DiDomenico split two matches in Wednesday’s district play, beating Avon’s Carmela Mostardi and Lindsay Aston 6-1, 6-4, but then lost to Shaker Heights 7-6, 6-7, 6-0. They will meet the No. 2 team from Shaker Heights Saturday and a win will send them to the state tournament.

Brocker defeated Sophia Horattas of Akron Hoban in her opening match 6-2, 6-1, but then lost to Lauren Davis of Gilmour Academy 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. She will meet Morgan Murray of Canton South Saturday for the right to move on to state.

Liberty’s Victoria Ferry lost in her opening round match to Surya Khadilkar of Gates Mills Hawken 6-3, 6-0 and Salem’s Meg Maroscher dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Murray in the opener.

In doubles play Poland’s Colleen Duncan and Danielle Mullis lost to Elyria Catholic’s Emily Mueller and Morgan Baker 6-3, 6-3, while both of Warren JFK’s doubles teams were ousted in the first round. Marissa Nocera and Chelsea Ross lost to Hannah Kerman and Maya Ajuja of Hawken 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Gabriella Lee and Dana Nocera were beaten by Emily Mazzola and Anna Benson of Chagrin Falls 6-4, 6-2.

Boys golf

HINCKLEY — The Canfield High boys golf team qualified for the Division I state tournament by placing fourth with 325 strokes in the district tournament Wednesday at Hinckley Hills course.

Mark Schimmel fired 77 over the par-72 course to lead coach Michael Murphy’s Cardinals, while Nick Hardy and Joe Miladore contributed 82s and Bobby Eddy 84.

Cleveland St. Ignatius won the district with 308 followed by Massillon Jackson 312 and Medina 318, all also qualifying for the state tourney which will begin Oct. 17 in Columbus.

The individual district winner was Jonathan Clark of Massillon Jackson with 74.

The four individual qualifiers were Tyler Light (Massillon Perry), Mike Guarino (Mentor), Ryan Szalay (Brunswick) and Brendan Byrne (Strongsville).
