Men’s golf is 5th
OLEAN, N.Y. — The YSU men’s golf team placed fifth in a 14-team field at the St. Bonaventure Invitational meet.
The Penguins shot 611 to trail Dayton (593), Temple (594), St. Bonaventure (598) and Rider (608).
Penguin Tim Morrow placed 10th with a 149 and Ryan Alpeter was 22nd with a 152.

Ursuline football kicks off Thursday
YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline High’s varsity football game against Akron Buchtel will be played Thursday at Stambaugh Stadium.
It’s Senior Night for the Fighting Irish, with all parents asked to be on the field at 6 p.m.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

MVFC names players of the week
ST. LOUIS — Herb Donaldson of Western Illinois, Nick Schommer of North Dakota State and Steven Fetzer of Illinois State were named players of the week by the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Donaldson rushed for an FCS season-high 273 yards and four TDs on a school-record 41 carries and caught two passes for 20 yards, accounting for more than half of Western Illinois’ total yards, in the Leathernecks 33-21 road win against Missouri State.
Schommer recorded his first interception of the season, came up with seven tackles, including one tackle for loss, and had a pass breakup as No. 6 North Dakota State rallied from a 20-point deficit in a 35-27 win over No. 11 Southern Illinois.
MUC’s Micheli named to Draddy list
DALLAS — Mount Union College senior quarterback Greg Micheli has been a NCAA Division III semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy.
Micheli is also a candidate for the 2008 Scholar-Athlete Award. Both awards are administered by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.
The Draddy Trophy recognizes an individual for his academic success, football performance and community leadership.
PIAA moves toward background checks
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has given preliminary approval to require background checks of all future sports official applicants and is working toward a plan of checking the organization’s 13,000 officials.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported last month that dozens of people who officiated school sports events since 2005 have criminal records.

YOUNGSTOWN — Applications for nomination to the Chaney High School athletic hall of fame are available at the school or from Ed Matey at the Youngstown board of education.

Curlin works half mile
ARCADIA, Calif. — Curlin ran a half-mile in 52.80 seconds Monday in his first official workout on Santa Anita’s synthetic surface under the watchful eye of trainer Steve Asmussen.
It was the first timed workout for the reigning Horse of the Year since he won the Jockey Club Gold Cup at New York’s Belmont Park on Sept. 27 and became thoroughbred racing’s all-time money winning horse.
Lake Placid prepares
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — With temperatures around freezing, the bobsled-skeleton-luge track in Lake Placid opened for the season Monday morning, allowing more than 100 American sliders to officially begin on-ice training.
The Lake Placid track was the first in the world to open in preparation for the 2008-09 season.
“It always feels good to get back on the ice,” said 2002 Olympic luger Ashley Walden. “We’ve all put a lot of hard work in this summer, so we’re ready to get back into sliding after the long break.”
Mavs hire Westphal
DALLAS — Former NBA head coach Paul Westphal was hired as the Mavericks’ executive vice president of basketball operations on Monday.
Westphal, who was a Dallas assistant coach last season, will assist general manager Donnie Nelson and work in scouting.
