Police probe 19-year-old's death in Falls jail

NEWTON FALLS — Police are investigating the death of a city man who was in police custody on drug charges.

Police Chief Robert Carlson said Zachary Dunn, 19, of 609 Ridge Road, was in the city jail on charges of possession of drugs, littering and cultivation of marijuana before being found hanging in his cell Monday afternoon.

Dunn had been in the jail since Thursday. Carlson said other criminal charges were pending in Braceville.

Carlson said items commonly found in the cell were used in the hanging. The coroner, he said, is set to make a ruling in the coming days.

Carlson said there has not been a death of this nature at the jail in the last 30 years.

Carlson said the department will review the situation surrounding the death to determine if any changes in procedure at the jail are needed.
