Talladega trucks

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Todd Bodine took the lead on the last lap and held off Ron Hornaday Jr. and Kyle Busch on Saturday in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Bodine raced to his second victory of the season and won for the second straight year in the 250-mile race on NASCAR’s largest track.

The trucks raced as many as three- and four-wide over the thrilling final laps, and Busch appeared as if he might hang on for his 20th overall victory this season in NASCAR’s top three series.

Hornaday finished second and Busch was third in the third trucks series race held at Talladega.

Pair earn berths

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Thorn Song’s trainer and jockey knew their horse was having a good day by looking at his ears.

“It was fast, but you could tell he was happy out there, doing what he was doing,” trainer Dale Romans said. “He had his ears pricked, and I knew Robby had him in the right spot.”

Jockey Robby Albarado didn’t have to do much work to guide Thorn’s side to victory in the $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile. The strategy: Get the lead early and never give it up.

“I know I was going awfully quick on the backside,” Albarado said. “But I felt like he was doing it within himself. He had his ears up. He was comfortable, and he sprinted home.”

Horse breaks record

HOBBS, N.M. — It was an easy win for Peppers Pride. About three lengths, in fact.

With the victory Saturday in a 6-furlong allowance race at Zia Park, the New Mexico thoroughbred put herself into the record books. She has now won 17 times in as many starts, setting a modern North American record.

Before Saturday, Peppers Pride shared the mark of 16 straight victories with Triple Crown winner Citation, two-time Horse of the Year Cigar, Mister Frisky and Hallowed Dreams.

Peppers Pride has career winnings of more than $867,000. Owner Joe Allen, a steak and barbecue restaurateur in Abilene, Texas, estimated she’s added about $50,000 under New Mexico breeders incentives.

Phelps honored

TOWSON, Md. — Michael Phelps was honored by his hometown Saturday with a parade attended by thousands eager to pay homage to the record-setting Olympian.

Phelps was the focal point of the “Parade of Gold”, which served as a homecoming for Maryland’s Olympic heroes, most notably the swimmer who won a record-setting eight gold medals at the Beijing Games this summer.

An estimated 5,000 people attended the event, according to Baltimore County police.

Wearing sunglasses, jeans, a T-shirt and a brightly colored jacket, Phelps waved to admiring fans from within an open-air military vehicle on a gorgeous autumn afternoon. Those in attendance waited months to show their affection for the Baltimore native, whose haul in China raised to 14 his career gold medals.
