Mooney captures Diocese crown; McDonald boys win


Boardman girls finished sixth at the Stow Invitational meet.

CANTON — John Zajac took first place in 17 minutes, 32 seconds in leading Mooney High School to the team championship with 35 points in the Diocese Cross Country Championships Saturday at Canton Central Catholic High School.

Cory Okular (17:36) and Nevin Lesnosky (17:45) of the Cardinals finished third and fourth, respectively.

St. Thomas Aquinas won the girls run with 26 points. Canton Central Catholic was second with 42 and Mooney third with 59.

Tuba Ioreb of the Crusaders set a school and meet record as she took first place in 19 minutes, 18 seconds.

Christine Oles (21:06) of Mooney placed third, Hannah Gerdes (21:20) of Ursuline was fourth, while Kay Rodomsky (22:26) and Meg Derisa (22:32) placed eighth and 10th, respectively.

McDonald boys win

BAZETTA — Lance Ronghi (16:51) placed third in leading the McDonald High boys to a first place finish with 43 points in Division III boys at the Legends Cross Country Meet at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Maplewood placed second with 61 points.

Nick Gliha (16:35) of Trinity won the 5000-meter race and Maplewood’s Eric Rupe (16:40) came in second.

In the Div. III girls run, Gilmour Academy took the team title with 46 points. Maplewood was second with 90, McDonald was fourth with 128 and Columbiana was fifth with 129.

Alex Bowers (19:24) of Berkshire took first place in the race. Stephanie Case (19:50) of Columbiana was third, while Lisa Yoder (20:42) of Maplewood finished ninth.

Mentor High’s boys were Div. I champs with 74 points, Boardman was fourth with 143 and Fitch 15th with 430.

Kyle Sullinger (15:44) of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy won the run while Sam Deskin (16:43) and Joe Stazak (16:52) were 16th and 24th.

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy took the girls Div. I title with 38 points. Fitch was 15th with 436.

Katie Gillespie (18:22) of CVCA won the run. Lindsey Eyster (21:41) of Fitch finished 67th.

Perry was the Div. II boys champ with 75 points. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary was second with 75 and Lakeview placed 16th with 453.

Dean Light (16:21) took first place in the run. Nick Trippi (17:52) of Lakeview finished 33.

St. Vincent-St. Mary’s took first place in the Div. II girls run with 65 points. Loutheast was 12th with 346, Girard 13th with 352 and Lakeview was 17th with 470.

Alex Bowers (19:24) of Berkshire won the run. Ashley Mylar (22:05) of Girard placed 50th.

Boardman sixth

STOW — Lauren Agnew (20:16) took 20th place in leading the Boardman High girls to a sixth place finish with 191 points in the Stow Invitational Cross Country Meet.

Hudson took first place with 66 points. Canfield was 10th with 281.

Erin Mercer (18:28) of Woodridge took first place in the run. Nicole Tiberio (19:39) of Canfield was eighth while Katie Heney (20:23) of Boardman was 23rd.
