Area tennis players advance to district
BOARDMAN — Ravenna High School’s Mariah Mostardi defeated Poland’s Gabrielle Brocker, 6-1, 6-1, Saturday for the Division II sectional tennis championship at the Boardman High courts.
In a consolation final, Liberty’s Victoria Ferry topped Salem’s Meg Maroscher, 6-2, 6-3.
In semifinal matches, Mostardi defeated Ferry, 6-1, 6-0, and Brocker defeated Maroscher, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles competition, Mooney’s Allie St. George and Jaclyn DiDomenico defeated Warren JFK’s Marissa Nocera and Chelsea Ross, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the consolation final, Poland’s Colleen Duncan and Danielle Mullis defeated Warren JFK’s Gabriella Lee and Dana Nocera, 6-4, 6-2.
In semifinal competition, Ross and Marissa Nocera defeated Duncan and Mullis, 6-4, 7-5, while St. George and DiDomenico defeated Lee and Dana Nocera, 6-2, 6-3.
The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to the Div. II District tournament this week at Wies Park in Canton.
Division I
CANTON —Boardman’s No. 1 doubles team of Carolyn and Ann Jesko lost to Jackson’s Stephanie Conlan and Ashley Thomas 6-3, 7-6 in Saturday’s Div. I sectional doubles final but still earned a second seed at next week’s district tournament.
The Spartans beat Hoover’s Kayla Carpenter and Lindsay Fisher in an earlier semifinal.
