Mahoning jury indicts N.J. man on rape charges

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a New Jersey man on two counts of rape and one count of menacing by stalking.

Oscar Ponce, 35, whose last known address was in Howell, N.J., was indicted Thursday on charges of sexually assaulting a woman he knows in her Boardman residence Sept. 3.

Police were called by a woman from New York, who said she had received a text message from the accuser.

The accuser told police Ponce arrived at her Beech Avenue home and stayed there. She told police she was communicating with a man on the Internet when Ponce became angry, hit and smothered her and forced her to have sex against her will.

The menacing by stalking charge alleges the stalking occurred between Jan. 1 and Sept. 3 of this year.

If convicted, Ponce would face two to eight years in prison on each rape count and six to 18 months in prison on the stalking charge.
