Canfield moves atop AAC Red Tier
CANFIELD — Kyle Vaclav scored two touchdowns Friday to lead the Canfield High football team to a 28-6 victory over Beaver Local.
Vaclav rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries, which included touchdown of 1 and 10 yards for the Cardinals (5-2, 2-0 All-American Conference Red). The win combined with Poland’s loss puts Canfield at the top of the league standings.
The Cardinals built a 28-0 lead by halftime and the Beavers weren’t able to score until Shawn Mercer tallied on a 3-yard run in the fourth period.
Brandon Bussard gained 82 yards on 23 rushes for the Beavers.
Canfield’s Adam Muth connected on five of seven passes for 69 yards and Vaclav caught one of them for 26.
Struthers 35, Salem 27
SALEM — Joe Balog carried 32 times for 379 yards and four touchdowns to help Struthers rally for its first win of the season.
Trailing 21-14, Balog scored the game’s next three touchdowns and added a two-point conversion for Struthers (1-6, 1-1 AAC White), which only got 22 yards of offense from its other weapons.
Geno Pasquinelli caught five passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns for Salem (0-7, 0-3), while Trent Toothman completed 18 of 33 passes for 324 yards, four TDs and two interceptions.
Jordan Strabala also had eight catches for 90 yards and a TD.
Champion 33, Campbell 22
CHAMPION — Bill Yartz hit Derek Sumner with two touchdown passes for the Golden Flashes (3-4, 1-3 AAC Blue).
Sumner’s first score covered 73 yards while the second was a 24-yard pass.
Chris Nicopolis rushed for touchdowns covering 16 and 2 yards. He gained 159 yards on 23 carries.
Also scoring for Champion was Tommy Stroup on a 2-yard run.
For the Red Devils (2-5, 1-3), Darrio Bivens rushed for 63 yards, including a 4-yard score. Jalil Turner had a 5-yard touchdown run while Lester Hughes found Richard Bledsoe with a 16-yard scoring toss.
Girard 35, Brookfield 7
GIRARD — Tied 7-7, unbeaten Girard (7-0) broke away by scoring 14 points in each the third and fourth quarters to prevail.
Talon Birmingham iced the contest as he tallied on 57 and 5 yard runs in the final period and he finished with 93 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Matt Palumbo, who connected on 6 of 9 passes for 48 yards, scored on a 2-yard run for the Warriors (2-5) in the first quarter.
