Upset bug bites No. 4 seeds in tennis

Warren JFK’s Bruce Timko earned a state berth in the Div. III golf tournament.

BOARDMAN — It was a bad week to be a No. 4 seed in the Div. II sectional tennis tournament.

The No. 4 seeds in both the singles and doubles competition were upset, while the top three seeds in singles and doubles earned district berths.

Top-seeded Mariah Mostardi of Ravenna cruised through the singles bracket, winning all three matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. She’ll meet Liberty’s Victoria Ferry in a semifinal match on Saturday.

Ferry upset fourth-seeded Megan Czuchra on Wednesday, then won her quarterfinal match on Thursday to earn a district berth.

The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to district play. Saturday’s matches are for seeding purposes and will begin at 9 p.m. at Boardman High School.

The other singles matchup features second-seeded Gabrielle Brocker of Poland against third-seeded Meg Maroscher of Salem.

On the doubles side, JFK’s Gabriella Lee and Dana Nocera upset fourth-seeded Alison and Julie Rice of Poland, then won their quarterfinal match to earn a district berth.

Lee and Nocera will play the top-seeded team of Allison St. George and Jaclyn DiDomenico of Mooney. The other semifinal features JFK’s Chelsea Ross and Marissa Nocera against Poland’s Colleen Duncan and Danielle Mullis.

In Division I, Boardman’s top doubles team of Carolyn Jesko and Ann Jesko advanced to the third round and were set to meet Revere’s No. 2 doubles team for a berth in the quarterfinals in the sectional tournament in Canton.

No other area singles or doubles team from either the Canton or Solon sectional remained alive after the first round of competition.

District golf

HARTVILLE — Warren JFK’s Bruce Timko shot 75 at Wednesday’s Div. III district golf tournament at Seven Hills to become the only area golfer to qualify for next week’s state meet.

Timko’s round tied him with Kirtland’s Tom Ribelli for medalist honors. The top two individuals not on a qualifying team earned state berths.

Gilmour Academy and Mogadore finished 1-2 to earn the automatic team berths.
