S. Range's Witmer qualifies for state golf


CANTON — South Range High senior Ariel Witmer shot a 77 Wednesday at Tam O’Shanter Hills and Dales Golf Course to qualify for the Division II girls golf tournament in Columbus next week as an individual.

Witmer lost a one-hole sudden-death playoff to Jenna Fitzgerald of Orange for medalist honors in the tournament. Fitzgerald also shot 77.

Two area teams also qualified for next week’s state tournament. Poland finished in third place with a 370 total, while Cardinal Mooney was fourth with a 373 score. Hathaway Brown won the team title with a 347 score and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin was second with a 364.

Boys district

RAVENNA — There were no area qualifiers in the Div. II boys district golf tournament at Windmill Lakes Golf Course.

Cardinal Mooney came the closest as the Cardinals finished 10th in the field with 344, while Ursuline was 12th at 345.

Minerva won the team title with 313, while University School (317), CVCA (322) and Chagrin Falls (323) also qualified for the state tournament next week.

Other area teams included Lakeview 355 and Salem 366. Lakeview’s Logan Massacci just missed qualifying individually after shooting a 77.

Among individuals, United’s Jason Ramus carded a 78, Hubbard’s Josh Dunch registered 79, Newton Falls’ Adam Peace an 87 and Champion’s Tom Lydic an 88.
