Grant for networking

WARREN — A foundation in Warren has granted $39,921 to the Early Childhood Resource Center in Canton.

The Warren-based Raymond John Wean Foundation, a philanthropic grant agency in Warren, donated the money to the ECRC to create networking meetings between child care administrators in both Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

The meetings, called the “Lunch n’ Learn” program, was modeled after networking luncheons in Stark County.

The ECRC is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System that works to improve early education and development in the county.

Firebombing attempt

YOUNGSTOWN — What first appeared to be a rubbish fire turned out to be an attempted firebombing at 434 E. Marion Ave. on the South Side late Tuesday. Firefighters said an accelerant had been thrown against the side door of the house.

A man said he and three friends who were house-sitting heard a noise at 10:40 p.m. then saw a large fireball.

They told firefighters that they’d seen a burning rag in the front yard Monday night but didn’t give it a thought until finding a bottle full of gas Tuesday morning. The fuse apparently fell out of the bottle before ignition during that attempt, firefighters said.

Bridge closed

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The bridge in the 400 block of Boyles Avenue near Logan Street will be closed until further notice, city officials said. The bridge needs repairs.

Rural Avenue will also be closed until further notice. The bridge crosses over Rural Avenue, and debris could fall from the underside onto the street. Officials said the city is attempting to fix the problem.

Warren power cut

WARREN — Power was cut off to about 200 customers, including the Warren police and fire departments, for about three hours Tuesday afternoon as a result of a fire on a utility pole on South Street near Vine Avenue Northeast.

An Ohio Edison spokeswoman said it appears that the pole caught on fire as a result of an insulator that cracked on the pole. The wind storm that knocked out power to thousands of Mahoning Valley customers on Sept. 14 probably caused the problem, and Tuesday’s rain probably set off the fire, she said.

The outage, which was solved by around 3:30 p.m., caused traffic to be rerouted off of South Street.
