$1M bond set for man shot by deputies

STAFF report

CORTLAND — Bond was set at $1 million for Vincent T. Coburn Jr., 53, shot three times by Trumbull County sheriff’s deputies last week during a domestic dispute at his home.

Judge Thomas A. Campbell of Trumbull County Area Court in Cortland also bound the case over to a Trumbull County grand jury after Coburn waived a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Coburn has pleaded innocent to three counts of felonious assault and a misdemeanor of domestic violence.

If Coburn is able to make bond, he will have to be on house arrest and monitored with a satellite tracking device.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to his Mecca Township house at 6067 Hoagland Blackstub Road by his wife, Linda, who said Coburn held a gun to her head and threatened her Sept. 24.

Deputies observed Coburn inside the house with a handgun and then talked to him in the front of the house while he was holding a rifle.

They asked Coburn to put down the gun, but he fired on two occasions without injuring anyone. Two deputies fired their weapons back at Coburn both times. The second time, Coburn went down inside his home, and deputies were able to apprehend him and take him to the hospital.
