Indians fire Isaac

CLEVELAND — Longtime Indians bullpen coach Luis Isaac has been fired by Cleveland manager Eric Wedge.

Wedge said Tuesday that “it was tough” to dismiss the 62-year-old Isaac, who had been with the club for 44 years.

Isaac joined Cleveland’s organization as a player in 1965 and also served as a minor league manager and scout.

“Luis was as loyal as the day is long,” Wedge said. “Ultimately, I felt we needed a different dynamic in the bullpen for that role. It’s been something I’ve been thinking about for a while.”

Wedge said the popular Isaac would not be reassigned in the organization.

Perkins cleared

NEWPORT, R.I. — Boston Celtics center Kendrick Perkins will be kept out of scrimmages during training camp because of offseason surgery on his left shoulder.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Tuesday that Perkins is allowed to run the floor “as long as no one else is running up and down the floor with him.”

Perkins injured his shoulder in Game 4 of the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. He missed Games 5 and 6 as the Celtics won their record 17th championship.

Doctors told Perkins he could probably return for the third preseason game, but Rivers said he might hold him out the first four exhibitions.

Germany picks to host

BERLIN — The women’s World Cup in 2011 in Germany will open in Berlin, with the championship game in Frankfurt.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was on hand Tuesday for the German soccer federation’s announcement of the nine venues for the 32 games.

“I hope football fans who don’t have as much of an impression of the women’s national team realize they can accomplish just as much as the men — that’s without a doubt,” Merkel said.

Germany hosted the men’s World Cup in 2006.

The 16 teams will play in Augsburg, Berlin, Bochum, Dresden, Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Moenchengladbach, Sinsheim and Wolfsburg. Magdeburg and Bielefeld did not make the cut.

The 2011 tournament will start June 26 in Berlin and end July 17 in Frankfurt.

Both cities were sites for the 2006 World Cup.
