YOUNGSTOWN — Saturday, the Youngstown State men’s basketball team and coaches will take part in the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer walk to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Players, coaches and the community are invited to take part in the 3-mile walk on YSU’s outdoor track.
Registration is at 9 a.m., with the walk scheduled for 10 a.m.
“We will have people from the university walk, as well as others who want to do something to help fight cancer,” said Tera DePaoli DMD, organizer of the event. “The number one health concern among people today is being diagnosed with cancer.
“This first-time walk is a way to do something positive not only for yourself, but also for those who have been diagnosed with this disease.”
The walk will be held regardless of the weather.
“Some individuals have told us that because of limited time they are only able to walk in events that take an hour or two of their time,” said Shannon Ealy, Regional Income Development Director of the American Cancer Society, Northeast Ohio Region. “This is the perfect activity for them. Not only are they helping to fight cancer, but the walk can be completed in a relatively short period of time.”
The entry fee is $10 per person, but there will be a discount for YSU students who show their student ID card. Also, there will be T-shirts, door prizes and a raffle. Bob Evans Restaurant in Canfield and Coca Cola are sponsors of the walk.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). More than 500 Division I, II, and III college basketball coaches are involved in the program. Coaches vs. Cancer has raised nearly $40 million since its inception to support the American Cancer Society.
