Liberty outlasts Champion 56-51 in season opener

LIBERTY — Mindy Dykes tossed in 18 points Friday to lead the Liberty High girls basketball team to a 56-51 victory over Champion.

Liberty recovered from a slow start in the All-American Conference Red Tier contest.

The Leopards trailed 15-5 after one quarter, but rallied to outscore the Flashes 26-9 in the second.

Ashley Venable and Jessica Weimer each added 10 points for Liberty, while Paige Loychik and Brianna Lewis each scored 11 points for Champion.

Campbell 45, Beaver Local 43

LISBON — Tayaira Grihm scored 8 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Red Devils rallied.

The Beavers (0-1) jumped out to a 14-4 lead and they were ahead 23-17 at intermission.

Campbell cut the deficit to 33-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nate’Tay Jones-Logan added nine points and she grabbed eight rebounds for the Red Devils.

Moses pulled down nine of 34 rebounds. Uceta had five steals.

The Red Devils fourced 22 turnovers.

Macy Weber paced the Beavers with 13 points.

Regina 60, Ursuline 41

SOUTH EUCLID — The Royals (1-0) built a 30-21 lead by halftime and the Irish (0-1) weren’t able to recover.

Aurielle Irizarry scored 14 points to lead the Ursuline attack.

Dominque Jenkins pulled down 11 of 32 rebounds and Kaneesha Tensley had four assists.

Jackie Cook took scoring honors for the Royals with 16 points and she had eight of Regina’s 39 rebounds.

The Irish’s game scheduled today with Akron Kenmore has been postponed until Valentine’s Day.

United 58, Western Reserve 25

BERLIN CENTER — Maggie Sell led Leetonia with 13 points and six steals as the Bears jumped out to a 17-2 first quarter lead and were never threatened.

Maggie Miller, Sierra Parks and Crystal Richards all added seven points for the Bears.

Claire Ferrando led the Blue Devils with 12 points.

Leetonia 46, Youngstown Christian 35

YOUNGSTOWN — Gina Jones and Lynsie Davis each scored 16 points as Leetonia shook off a slow start to defeat Youngstown Christian.

The Bears fell behind early, but took a 22-20 halftime lead and then outscored the Eagles 24-15 in the second half.

Rashna Strozier and Caylin Hayes each had nine points for the Eagles.

Mathews 67, Bristol 48

VIENNA — The Mustangs rushed out to a 25-8 lead and they were in command 40-22 at halftime Lindsay Bucker triggered the Mathews attack with 19 points.

Emily Culp added 15. Tilly Dickers had 10 and she grabbed 13 rebounds and had 10 steals.

Alyssa Giesy led Bristol with 16 points.
