YOUNGSTOWN — An approved standard replacement mailbox and post will be installed if a Mahoning County snowplow hits a mailbox this winter, the county engineer’s office said. The county will replace only mailboxes and posts that have been hit directly by a plow, not those that are merely pushed over by snow coming from the plow. Sentenced in Mercer Co.

AUSTINTOWN — A Mercer County, Pa., Common Pleas Court judge recently sentenced James Songer, 25, of North Main Street, Austintown, to 12 to 26 months in jail followed by five years’ probation and ordered him to make restitution for recklessly endangering another person, a misdemeanor, and fleeing and eluding, a felony. According to court records, on April 30 of this year, he fired 12 rounds from a handgun into a Sharon home occupied by a woman. She was not injured. The same day, he led police officers on a chase from Hermitage and South Pymatuning Township over the state line into Ohio.

Donations are needed

YOUNGSTOWN — Beatitude House seeks items that homeless children living at the home can give to their mothers at Christmas.

Appreciated are practical items such as gloves or socks, or “luxury” items such as bath sets or perfume (no candles).

The children will get to pick a gift from the donated items, and volunteers will help wrap them.

Financial planning class

YOUNGSTOWN — Warriors Inc. is having free financial planning classes from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays in December at the Hope Building, 2733 Market St.

The classes are geared toward high school and college students and are meant to help participants become financially savvy.

Topics include the value of planning, goal-setting and thoughtful decision-making within the context of personal financial decisions.

Housing group grants

YOUNGSTOWN — Ohio Department of Development has awarded two nonprofit housing groups in Mahoning County a total of $500,000 in grants.

Catholic Charities Housing Opportunities will receive $100,000, and Interfaith Home Maintenance will get $400,000. The two groups were among 30 nonprofit organizations in the state to receive a piece of the $6 million awarded for home repairs and down-payment assistance.

Baby Talk signing class

YOUNGSTOWN — The organizers of a Baby Talk sign language class at the Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, 2008 Lynn Ave., plan a special holiday edition Wednesday. Former families enrolled in Baby Talk, as well as new ones, are invited to learn special holiday signs, sing songs, enjoy light refreshments and listen to holiday stories. Two sessions are available. Firefighters in workshop

Emergency responders from around Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia took part in a two-day workshop on oil field emergencies earlier this month. Firefighters from the Damascus Fire Department and the Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Department were among the participants: Brian Blevins, Derek Day, Thomas Mather, and Mike Wyss from the Damascus department; and Anthony Cope, Sylvester Harr Jr., William McGuire, Joe McKarns, and Timothy Wood from the Hanover department.

Seeking man’s relatives

AKRON — The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is looking for relatives of 55-year-old Charles R. Reighart, 3653 Hiwood Ave., Stow. Reighart was found dead of natural causes at his home Nov. 18. David Turney, medical examiner investigator, said Reighart had no children, and attempts to reach Reighart’s ex-wife have been unsuccessful.
