Williamson tops Horizon honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Youngstown State sophomore swimmer Ashley Williamson (Dundee, Scotland) was named the Horizon League Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Williamson won four events at the four-team Youngstown State Invitational while also adding a second-place finish. Williamson won the 200-yard butterfly in a school-record time of 2:09.40, the 200-yard IM (2:10.77), the 100-yard backstroke (59.75 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.95 seconds). Williamson added a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.01).

Volleyball signs three

YOUNGSTOWN — A setter, an outside hitter and a middle blocker have signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and volleyball careers at Youngstown State University, YSU head volleyball coach Joe Bonner announced this week.

Angie Roidt (McFarland, Wis.), Suzanne Lassiegne (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Martina Davis (Penn Hills, Pa.) will also join the Penguins’ for the 2009 season.

Roidt was named to the PrepVolleyball.com Senior Aces list, which recognizes the top 250 seniors in the nation. She was a unanimous Rock Valley first-team all-conference selection at McFarland High School as a senior, and she was a two-time first-team All-Badger South honoree as a sophomore and junior.

Softball gets fifth recruit

YOUNGSTOWN — Vicky Rumph (Palmerston, Ontario) is the fifth recruit to sign a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period to join the Youngstown State softball program, Head Coach Brian Campbell announced Wednesday. Rumph joins Rebecca Bonola (Cibola, Texas), Sarah Gabel (Columbus, Ohio), Hana Somogyi (Chicago, Ill.) and Kayla Vallery (Atlanta, Ga.) in the 2009-10 recruiting class.

Rumph, an infielder and catcher, led Norwell District Secondary School to a fifth-place finish at the 2006 Ontario Provincial High School Championships.

Correction Springfield High punter Bryan Visingardi was named first-team All-Ohio in Division V. Visingardi was not included in Wednesday’s story listing the area players in Divisions IV, V and VI.

Raiders’ QB gets academic honors

TOWSON, Md. — Mount Union College senior quarterback Greg Micheli (Upper Sandusky/Upper Sandusky) has been named ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-American of the Year and to the Academic All-American First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Junior punter Jay Carpenter (Fairmont, WV/Fairmont) was also named the Academic All-American Second Team.

Micheli joins former Purple Raider running back Chuck Moore as the only football players in school history to be named to the All-American First Team in back to back seasons.

An All-American quarterback for the No. 1 ranked Raiders, he has completed 179 of 232 passes for 2,791 yards, while leading the team to an 11-0 record. He has thrown only two interceptions and has 29 touchdown passes as the nation’s top-rated passer with a passer rating of 215.77.

Hiram soccer coach honored

HIRAM, OHIO -- Warren native and Hiram College Head Men’s Soccer Coach Carl Capellas has been named the 2008 North Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

Capellas joins six of his players to earn conference recognition for a season that saw the Terriers post a 13-6 overall record and make a first-ever appearance in the NCAC Tournament. Hiram’s 13 wins this season was the most since 1996 when the Terriers won a school record 16 games. The Terriers also posted back-to-back seasons with 10 or wins for the first time in over 10 years.

Swallow finalist for top award

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College senior quarterback Bobby Swallow (Salem, Ohio/West Branch) has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy. The Gagliardi Trophy has become one of the leading collegiate football awards and is widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics and community service.
