YOUNGSTOWN — The Salvation Army recognized a Poland businessman for his selfless help to others.

Earlier this month, Tom Duncan, the owner of Duncan’s Bath and Kitchen Center in Poland, was presented with one of The Salvation Army’s highest honors, the “Others Award.” Duncan was honored at the Red Kettle Kickoff Breakfast for making goodness toward others a part of his daily routine, according to Maj. James Foley, The Salvation Army’s Mahoning County coordinator.

“In addition to his commitment to our organization as an advisory board member, Tom, along with his wife, Cyndi, have a real passion for helping people on a personal level,” Maj. Foley said.

Duncan has supported another Youngstown family in a figurative “adoption” program for the past eight years, providing for many of their basic needs, including delivering food every month.

Upon receiving the award, Duncan shared his gratitude to The Salvation Army in return.

“Thousands of people have better lives because of the services [The Salvation Army] provides the community,” he said. “If people saw the smiling faces of children during the holidays, they would never walk past a kettle without giving.”

The award is given to those who have exhibited extraordinary service on behalf of others, as well as exceptional service to the organization and the community. Only one “Others Award” is given each year.
