COLLEGE BASKETBALL Wednesday’s other games

MEN

No. 6 Texas 70, Oregon 57

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Third-place games might be the toughest of all for a college basketball team. Playing one the morning after a one-point loss to a fellow Top Ten team put Texas in a really difficult spot. The sixth-ranked Longhorns bounced back from a loss to Notre Dame with a victory over Oregon to take third place in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. “You’re always disappointed when you don’t get to play in a championship game. Consolation games are really hard to play in, but I told the team last night this would be a character game and a chance to find out what we’re about,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said. “Our experience and maturity allowed us to overcome a sluggish start.” Damion James had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Longhorns (4-1), who lost 81-80 to No. 8 Notre Dame in the semifinals, a game that ended with A.J. Abrams’ shot from beyond halfcourt bouncing off the front of the rim. The third-place finish matched their best in three appearances in the Maui Invitational. “Our coaches did a great job of getting us ready for the game,” James said. “This is what we do, this is our life. It’s like a job. It was just another day for us.” Instead of having to play catch-up as they did in the loss to the Fighting Irish, Texas took command early this time with a 21-1 run during which Oregon (3-3) couldn’t make a shot from the field and barely connected from the free throw line.

Alabama 58, Saint Joseph’s 48

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Alonzo Gee had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Alabama to a victory over Saint Joseph’s in the fifth-place game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. The Crimson Tide (3-2) finished with a 37-23 rebound advantage and outscored the Hawks 38-18 in the paint. Tasheed Carr matched his career high with 23 points for the Hawks (2-3), who opened the tournament with a 68-50 loss to No. 6 Texas. Alabama, which lost 92-69 to Oregon in the first round, closed the first half on a 10-0 run and scored the first basket of the second half for a 31-18 lead, its biggest of the game. Saint Joseph’s, which opened the game missing nine of its first 12 shots, got as close as 43-39 on a 3 by Carr with 8:24 to go, but Gee scored on a tip-in and Yamene Coleman followed with a basket down low. Both schools were making their first appearance in the tournament.

Bradley 80, Richmond 66

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Dodie Dunson and Chris Roberts scored 13 points each for Bradley.

Theron Wilson and Sam Maiscalco added 12 points apiece for the Braves (3-2), who shot 58.3 percent (14 of 24) in the first half as they took a 40-28 halftime lead in the O’Reilly Auto Parts College Basketball Experience. Bradley led by as much as 15 points in the first half. Kevin Anderson scored 24 points and David Gonzalvez added 16 points for Richmond (3-2). The Spiders drew within 41-38 in the second half and were within four points on a number of occasions. Midway through the second half, the Spiders trailed 51-47 but Bradley countered with an 18-5 run that put the game out of reach with 5:23 left to play.
