Writing contest open for grades 6-12

The LAOH National History writing contest is open to all youths in grades six through 12. Essay topic for grades six through eight is “From Ireland to Kentucky Derby — The History of Irish Influence on Horse Races.” Essay must be between 500 and 1,000 words.

Essay topic for grades nine through 12 is “The Celtic Tiger: What is it?” Essay must be between 750 and 1,500 words.

The deadline for submission is Feb. 5, 2009. Contact Eileen Duffy for additional guidelines at (330) 788-4603. Five prizes will be awarded for each group, ranging from $50 to $1,000.

Holiday fundraiser is all about kids

MERCER, Pa. — The Friends of Children’s Aid Society, 350 W. Market St., is having its annual Christmas Celebration for Children from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5.

The public is invited. Featured will be baked goods and candy, Christmas and craft items.
